CHR and x86 are licensed differently. CHR tiers (P1, P10, P-Unlimited) differ only in per-interface upload speed; every other RouterOS feature is included. x86 license levels (4, 5, 6) differ in features, such as how many tunnels and HotSpot users are allowed.

Choose the platform when you redeem the key. Once applied to a CHR instance or an x86 system, a license can't be moved between CHR and x86. See MikroTik's CHR licensing and x86 licensing guides.

RouterOS license FAQ

A prepaid key is a RouterOS license bought in advance, without assigning it to a device. You redeem it from your MikroTik.com account when you are ready: either to license a Cloud Hosted Router (CHR) instance, or by converting it into a license key for an x86 system using that system's Software ID.

Yes, either one. You choose when you redeem the key. Once a license has been applied to a CHR instance or an x86 system, it can't be transferred from CHR to x86 or the other way round, so redeem it for the platform you intend to use.

CHR tiers are throughput-based: P1 is limited to 1 Gbps upload per interface, P10 to 10 Gbps, and P-Unlimited has no enforced limit, with all other features included. x86 license levels are feature-based: Level 4 allows 200 PPPoE, PPTP, L2TP and OVPN tunnels and 200 HotSpot users, Level 5 raises these to 500 (OVPN unlimited), and Level 6 removes the limits.

Yes. CHR licenses are perpetual and can be moved to another CHR instance; a licensed CHR checks in with MikroTik's account server periodically, and if it can't, RouterOS keeps running but upgrades and package changes are disabled. x86 licenses never expire and are tied to the Software ID of the storage device they were applied to.

RouterOS itself is free to download from MikroTik. Without a paid license, CHR runs on the Free tier at up to 1 Mbps upload per interface, and an x86 installation runs a 24-hour trial before it needs a license. The license unlocks the tier or level you buy.

On CHR, P1 can be upgraded to P10 or P-Unlimited, and P10 to P-Unlimited; the upgrade is bought at the full price of the higher tier, and the previous license returns to your account. On x86, a higher level is bought as a new license at full price.

No. MikroTik hardware routers come with a RouterOS license preinstalled, so nothing needs to be purchased for them.

When ordering, choose either a transfer into your MikroTik.com account (using an authorization key from your account) or license generation for a Software ID. You will receive an order confirmation email after payment, and the license is delivered after your order is reviewed; delivery is not automatic. We will never ask for your MikroTik password.

Yes. Choose a quantity before adding to cart; each CHR instance or x86 system needs its own license. For Software ID delivery, enter one Software ID per license. You can add several license lines with different delivery methods to one order. For larger quantities, contact us for a quote.
